Recycle The Power

A Battery Deposit And Recycling Program

The Recycle the Power
Program was established by
Quinte Waste Solutions, with
the cooperation of local retailers
to collect and divert potentially
harmful dry cell battery
waste from the landfill.
By eliminating batteries from
local landfill sites, the Recycle
the Power Program is striving
for community health and
sustainability while maximizing landfill longevity.

The Issue

Batteries are a small amount of landfill waste, but they are a concentrated source of heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, zinc, nickel, silver and in some cases mercury. All of these chemicals may have harmful effects on both the human and natural environment.

Batteries that are sent to landfill sites eventually break down releasing the heavy metals contained in the batteries into the soil. These chemicals have the potential to enter both the air and ground water and to become concentrated in plant and animal tissue, creating the potential for disease, genetic mutations and reproduction problems throughout the natural environment.

All of the
batteries that enter
the Recycle the
Power program will
be fully recycled.
For Example: Alkaline, Zinc
Carbon batteries are ground
up and neutralized. The
Metals are then extracted and
used in the production of
stainless steel. Zinc is
extracted and sent to
processors for reuse.

Batteries accepted:
All A, AA, AAA, C, D, J, 3 Volt, 6 Volt
and 9 Volt Alkaline batteries are
accepted.
Button batteries are also accepted
(these are often found in watches and hearing aids.)
