Quinte Waste Solutions staff always look forward to the opportunity of getting into the schools to talk to students about waste reduction issues. We have developed a series of three workshops that can be adapted to various age ranges. These are:
General Waste Reduction Workshop
Students learn about the importance of making less garbage. We look at the types of things that constitute waste from the average household and discuss the best "Reduction" method for each item. We also go through classroom blue boxes and garbage cans to show students how much recyclables are either being thrown in the garbage or blue box.
Composting Workshop
Problems related to waste disposal options are discussed with the students and a specific look at the portion of the waste stream that could be composted is taken. Students can have a first-hand opportunity to examine some finished compost to find a multitude of "decomposer organisms".
Hazardous Waste Workshop
Problems associated with disposal of hazardous waste are discussed with the students. We look at ways to identify specific types of hazardous materials and discuss proper disposal methods. The main focus of the workshop is an investigation of non-hazardous alternatives to typical household items that can be damaging to the environment.
If you have another idea about a workshop that you would like for your students, our staff is always open to discussing ways that the above workshops can be modified to suit your needs. Give us a call at 394-6266 to talk about the possibilities.
